What is a wall fish for my cable internet hookup?
"I was informed that I need a wall fish for my cable modem setup to function properly. Could someone explain what a wall fish is and how it's used for cable internet installation?"

Actually, this is not any type of hardware, but it is a service performed by the cable installer called “wall fishing”. This is the act of running the cable and “fishing” it up through the wall frame so that it is concealed.
Wall fishing is not only specifically for cable hookups, but also for people who want to conceal wiring for their entertainment centers, in-home LAN cabling, etc.
The price for having the “wall fish” done depends on the wall, insulation, and any internal obstactles that make it more difficult to run the cable.

I was told I needed a wall fish so my cable modem could work.
I think the person who said “wall fish” was probably talking about a tool I call a “fish tape.” It’s for “fishing” a cable through a wall – just a long, sort of flimsy wire that has a hook on one end – you put this wire through the hole in the wall, lead it out the other hole, hook whatever you want to fish through the wall to the hook, and then pull the tape back through.
In short, you don’t need one of these to hook up a cable modem – your cable provider should run the cable for you (and the technician might use a fish tape to run the cable!).

If you are running coax in your wall, you need RG6 with a CL-4, or other in-wall fire approval rating. I wouls run a couple Cat6 while at it, home run to where the CM/router will be.
