Can you cook instant pudding mix on the stove?

If it calls for two cups, use 1.5 cups instead.) Yes! Years ago, I had an Aunt who was a baker did use instant pudding to make her creme patissiere (custard). I was young then & thought it was ridiculous for her to do all those extra steps when she only needed to add milk and stir. Her answer: custard has different texture than instant pudding. I only use it to substitute for eggs & sugar. Today, I want to make custard & I only had instant pudding. So, I pull out the custard recipe & did what my aunt said, substitute it with eggs & sugar. The result is perfect. I get myself great custard, or bake & serve pudding. Here is the recipe I follow:-6 egg yokes-1/2 cup caster sugar-1/4 cup cornstarch-1/4 oz. all purpose flour-2 1/4 cups milk-vanilla pod-1/2 oz butter.I drop the 1st 2 ingredients & substitute for that big box of instant pudding, & voila`! perfect french custard.
